“Infants are not little children, children are not little adults” Anthony Raimondi

A Pediatric Neurosurgeon has the knowledge and practice to diagnose and intervene in the nervous system of children, specifically the brain and spinal cord, to repair injuries, improve their health and quality of life.

Types of Conditions

There are two categories in the types of conditions that a pediatric neurosurgeon treats:

Birth conditions

  • Congenital bone malformations such as craniosynostosis, in which a deformation is observed in the child’s skull, preventing his brain from growing correctly.
  • Brain malformations such as hydrocephalus, where an excessive amount of cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain, causing damaging pressure on it.
  • Alterations in the spinal cord, such as open or occult spina bifida, which is a congenital malformation of the spinal cord that causes serious problems in it and in the bones of the spinal column.

Unexpected Illnesses

  • Trauma at birth, blows or falls where the child’s head is impacted, causing immediate or progressive problems that make the patient’s life run or their adequate psychomotor development.
  • Vascular accidents in which there is bleeding or cerebral infarction, and that despite not being very common, claim the life of one in ten patients who suffer from it.
  • Chronic or disabling conditions such as refractory or difficult-to-control epilepsy that, even with medication, continue to have these episodes or attacks.
  • Tumors or neoplasms of the central nervous system (brain and/or spinal cord), commonly causing cancer and problems in the psychomotor development of infants.

Expertise in minimally invasive surgery

For ailments in particular, we perform minimally invasive surgeries, in which damage to healthy tissue is minimized, reducing bleeding and lowering the risk of complications.

Using high-quality, state-of-the-art medical equipment, we perform microsurgery thanks to surgical microscopes for better vision, as well as other tools such as the neuronavigator or the stereotactic arch that allows us to accurately locate the patient’s injury.

Children are not just little adults! What advantages does a Pediatric Neurosurgeon have?

Experience

The problems seen by pediatric neurosurgeons are often very different from those seen by general or adult neurosurgeons.

Children's understanding

Children can't always tell what's bothering them and can't always tell the doctor about their symptoms correctly.

Children's techniques

Children do not always have the patience to collaborate in medical exams, this specialist is trained in making children feel comfortable.

Maximum Specialization

2 additional years of special training in pediatric diseases related to neurosurgical diseases, in addition to the 5 or more years of training in neurological surgery and the 6 years of medical school and surgical internship.

Knowledge

You can be certain that a pediatric neurosurgeon will have the widest range of possible treatments for an infant or child due to their high degree of specialization and experience.

Special tools

Pediatric neurosurgeons use equipment and techniques specially designed for children, improving the chances of treatment success and reducing surgical and recovery times.

Unique spaces

It has offices or spaces designed for babies and children, so that they can relax and have less tension or fear during the consultation or check-up.

Full accompaniment

Pediatric neurosurgeons have a special and long-standing relationship with children with nervous system problems, as they often require close and continuous follow-up throughout childhood and adolescence.
