Infantile hydrocephalus is a condition in which a child’s brain produces too much cerebrospinal fluid, which can cause pressure on the brain and developmental problems.
However, childhood hydrocephalus is treatable by a pediatric neurosurgeon and children can lead normal, healthy lives with proper treatment. Parents can find support in support groups online or in person, as well as nonprofit organizations that focus on childhood hydrocephalus.
The most common treatment for infantile hydrocephalus is the placement of a device called a “shunt” in the child’s brain. This device consists of a tube that drains excess cerebrospinal fluid to another part of the body, usually the abdomen, where it can be absorbed by the body. Always placed by a specialist, mainly a Pediatric Neurosurgeon.
Another possible treatment is ventricular endoscopy, a surgical procedure that involves creating a small hole in the child’s skull to allow a camera and small surgical instrument to be inserted into the brain to treat hydrocephalus.
In some cases, infantile hydrocephalus can be treated with a combination of both methods.
In addition to medical treatment, children with hydrocephalus often require occupational therapy and physical therapy to address any disabilities they may have as a result of pressure on the brain.
It is important for parents to seek early medical attention with a pediatric neurosurgeon if they suspect their child has infantile hydrocephalus. The sooner the condition is diagnosed and treated, the better the chances of treatment success and the better the prospects for the child’s long-term health and well-being.
